Autism, Yoga Therapy & Reiki

I have been working with a teenage boy who has autism for 2 1/2 months now. He is fairly high on the spectrum – I have a hard time understanding what he is saying most times, but we have worked thru that. I go to his house once a week on the same day and he greets me at the door with a smile and then runs to his room to lay out the yoga mat, close the blinds and help me get the Tibetan music going (his favorite). One half hour Yoga Therapy and one half hour of Reiki (also his favorite).

I started to get a little discouraged because I was not really seeing any results or changes in him, but I kept coming because he loves it and his smile was making it worth it. Last week was the turning point…

When we first started, I bought him his own yoga mat that has pictures of different poses on it. As we were doing our yoga session, he started pointing at a pose on the mat. I was not sure what he was getting at but I asked him if he wanted to try something new. As you may know, trying something new is not usually a pleasant experience for those with this condition. He flashed a big smile, pointed to the pose and loudly announced “Try something new!”.

We tried the new pose and he smiled and laughed, being so proud of himself. Much to my surprise, he picked out 5 more new poses to “try something new”! It was such a great accomplishment for him and I realized that, even though I did not see results right away, it is the little things that are going on underneath the surface that make the difference. I look forward to our continued sessions and exploring what ever happens next.
